Dr. DeMeester earned his medical degree at Loyola Stritch School of Medicine in Chicago and completed a residency in General Surgery at the University of Michigan. He completed a Cardiothoracic Surgery residency at Washington University in St. Louis. To gain further expertise with complex foregut problems and to refine his skills in minimally invasive laparoscopic and thoracoscopic procedures he undertook a one-year esophageal surgery fellowship at the University of Southern California. He joined the faculty of the USC Department of Surgery and received his board certification in thoracic surgery in 1997. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and a member of the American Surgical Association, the American Gastroenterological Association, The Society of Thoracic Surgeons and SAGES.
Flavio Malcher, MD
Dr. Flavio Malcher Martins de Oliveira completed medical school in 1997, at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). He completed his medical residency in General Surgery at the University Hospital Clementino Fraga Filho (UFRJ), and in Videolaparoscopic Surgery, at the University Hospital Gaffrée and Guinle, Universidade Federal do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UniRio). He is the leader of numerous activities and societies, serving as Governor of the Americas Hernia Society, International Board Member of Society of Laparoscopic Surgeons (SLS), Founder and past President of the Brazilian Hernia Society (SBH), Past General Secretary of the Latin America Federation of Hernia (FELH) and Board member of Abdominal Core Health Quality Collaboration (ACHQC).
